Lighting Matters
Dear Brenda,

Light is something we take for granted, if its daytime, there's the sun, if it's nightime we flip a switch, and there is light. Back when I was a young student Architect in Cal Poly I said it, and it stills feels truth today, Lighting Matters, it really does, it can set a mood, evoque a time period and even make you look better. Lighting seems to be overlooked as a factor when choosing color in walls and furniture, but the reality is, that lighting can change how color and textures present themselves both indoors and out.

See the differenceLight the Difference

There's no argument that the home designed by Burdge and Associates shown in this picture its beautiful and elegant, however, when the night falls and the lights come up, this beautiful Tuscan single story home looks more like a palace fit for kings. It's all a visual effect, the right positioning of uplights, downlights and the variety on the proportions of the fixtures, can allow you to achieve a very different look both indoors and out.

The style of the light makes a difference too, as you can see the entrance to the home is flanked by two pendant lights that hang from the wall arms, while the rest of the lights have brackets directly attached to the walls, small details like this can help you define a space and make different outdoor rooms, the backyard shows a double tiered chandelier for the main outdoor dinning area while a smaller single one outlines the smaller more private sitting space.
Lighting StyesStyle and Statement

There's diferent lighting with diferent purpose and each can help to enhance the design, but the light fixture can be a statement and conversation piece in itself, a light fixture needs to be in tune with both the home's style and decor, as well as its purpose, be it ambience, task or accent.

The light fixtures you put into a room need to be an extension of the style and decor of the environment. With the same careful consideration and thought and it will bring the room together. The bottom left corner shows an intersting and very modern piece with interesting lines, even the bulb makes an appearance as part of the statement.
Be it formal, contemporary or retro, choosing a light should follow the same rules you have applied to all the other decorative, functional and artistic elements, but it can also add a personal touch; the chandelier on the top right has an added a touch of whimsy with the pink ornaments, making it the perfect addition to the little girls room where it hangs.
9 Months in the Making

Dear readers, my name is Brenda Kriger and I am the Editor In Chief for adg electronic media. Gerald has been asking me to write a column for quite some time now, but I have not seen the need until now. Since I am to blame for most of the changes you have seen in our different sites and newsletter, after 9 months of carefull planning and testing, we thought it appropriate for me to introduce The new Architectural Detail Group.com we have made our site easier to navigate and added several new features. First, we have a new portal that shows you all the different parts of the company so you can easily get to where you need to. We added new picture galleries for the ironworks and furniture divisions and we have also included more information on our company, our projects and even an archive of past newsletter issues. We are very excited about this new easy to navigate format and hope you find it useful.

On a last note I would like to thank everyone's comments and feedback during our testing phase; Thank You, we couldn't have gotten here without you.

As always, we welcome your comments and input. Please write to me at letters@architecturaldetailgroup.com.

Frame LightItem of the Month:
Frame Lights

A spotlight to highlight a favorite painting or cherished portrait is a great way to enhance its beauty and commanding presence in a room, however, attaching a spotlight to the ceiling usually involves costly drywall and paint touchups to both ceiling and wall. To avoid the incidentals on the project, you can opt for a great looking easier to install frame light. These nice fixtures can be wall mounted which makes them easier to connect to the light switches, they are easier to set at the right position to enhace your picture, the bulb is easier to reach and change and they are nicer to look at than the spotlight you would hang on the ceiling. They are available in 8, 18 and 24 inches wide in a wide variety of finishes. For more information visit adglighting.com

When it comes to lighting it is not only about how you light the space, but what do you light your space with, think of a light fixture as that last accessory that turns your outfit from great to fabulous.

Sincerely,
