| Inspiration is in the air |
Dear Reader,
You never know when
creativity will spark; I always keep a pad of paper near
by so I can sketch a new idea, before it goes away. I
believe inspiration is everywhere, in nature, in man
made things, in space, but I can also tell you that
influences and work from other Architects and Designers
fuel and spark my imagination taking the work I do in a
different and sometimes unexpected direction. With this
in mind I want to share with you all one of the greatest
source of inspiration I have encountered. |

Classic
Inspiration
For about 15 years now, I've had
the pleasure to work in several projects for Marc
Appleton. His firm Marc Appleton and Associates
opened its doors in 1976 mainly because of Marc's own
discouragement about an industry that was "more
selfishly intent on impressing their fellow
professionals and competitors than serving their
clients"*. Marc's approach was different; he
has made the conscious effort of listening to the
clients wants, needs and budgets, which has resulted in
beautiful homes that represent their occupants rather
than an architects signature design. Appleton and
associates is "committed to the idea that architecture
is principally a craft rather than art, and a process
rather than an object"*.
Marc Appleton and Associates is the
newest book in the New Classicists series by Images
Publishing, featured in the book you will find gorgeous
pictures of
15 of the firm's projects, -some of which I've
personally have the pleasure to work on- Looking at his
work you will realize that Marc's creations seem to be
part of the landscape, they have that lived in been
there feel. This is the same principle we have applied
to many of our pieces, from lighting to furniture and
iron, we do not want them to look like they are bright
shinny new things, but rather a great find encountered
on a recent visit to an exotic location.

Preventive
Maintenance
After a cold and rainy season like the one
we have had so far this year, it is always a good idea
to give your outdoor lanterns, sconces and other
fixtures some TLC. We recommend cleaning the glass with
water and mild soap then rinsing clean. For the metal
finish, place a small amount of orange oil on a clean
white cloth and rub to a nice luster. This will keep
dirt and grime off your fixtures and help keep them in
good shape for years to come.
Please send in your questions to info@adgmail.com
we love to answer them. |
You
wrote, we listened:
You all know how much I like to talk, and
as much as I love to hear my own voice, it is not easy
to call you all on a weekly basis, so the ADG blog is
there to fill the void. We read your feedback and
requests and we have made the improvements starting with
a new permanent address within the adg site and a new
easier to read look and format; we also added a new Q&A
section in which you can have an ongoing conversation on
design and architecture. Since I shared one of my
sources of inspiration with you, I would like to hear
from yours so the first question on the blog is:
What inspires you?
I hope you enjoy this
improvements and I look forward to our conversations.
For our Q&A session click on the Q&A category on
the left side of the blog screen. |

My First Podcast Bruce Karasik of
the Conejo Valley Business Leaders recently invited me
to record a podcast for their premier issue which will
launch next week Friday February 15th. In it we
discussed Home Improvement and the benefits of retaining
an expert. An invitation will be extended to you for
this Premiere. |
On a last note, I would like to thank you all for
the great response and nice comments we've received
about our last issue. We strive to give you useful
information, ideas and inspiration and it means so
much to us when you let us know we are on the right
track.
Sincerely,
 Gerald Olesker
